Vortexes.

The use of a Vortex on any filter system designed to be used with koi is, in our view, now absolutely essential.  A Vortex is without doubt, the best, most efficient and simplest mechanical filter device on the market - bar none!  Like all great inventions, the principle on which a Vortex works is very simple.  The water enters the unit from a tangentially positioned entry point which causes the water to spin very slowly. This causes all suspended solids in the water to be moved to the sides of the chamber via tangential forces.  When the solids hit the sides of the unit friction causes them to slow down and they drop out of suspension down the sides of the Vortex into a steeply sided cone or funnel where they collect.  A special bottom drain in the Vortex is controlled by a slide or ball valve and ALL the dirt can be removed by simply opening the valve for approximately 5 seconds.  No other cleaning is required!  With a correctly sized installation, over 80% of the solid waste entering a Vortex chamber can be removed before it passes through to the next chamber.

It is vital to size the Vortex correctly for your installation, and Vortexes are designed to be used with certain flow rates.  If the Vortex is too small, the water will spin too fast and some of the benefits will be lost. Please ASK us for our recommendation before ordering- we will be happy to specify the correct size unit for your system.

Cetus Pond Sieve Prefilter

The New Cetus pond sieve is a very efficient mechanical filter which can be fitted directly to a bottom drain or to a skimmer. It can be pump or gravity fed and incorporates a patented floating weir system which regulates the water level in the unit, and ensures a constant and even curtain of water flow over the stainless steel filter screen regardless of pump size. Water is pumped from the base of the unit back to the pond (or to the next stage of your filter) and the unit features a drain valve to remove solids which collect in the debris trap. The stainless steel screen is 300 micron to ensure very fine solids can be removed, and owing to the curved 'ski slope' design of the screen, it cannot block.

Trickle Tower Filtration.

The principle or trickle tower filtration is well documented, and trickle towers are without doubt the most efficient conventional biological filters available today. Water is pumped up to the top of the chamber(s) where it is dispersed via a spray bar over a tray of media.  The water percolates through the given media and then trickles down to the next tray of media where the process is repeated until the water returns by gravity into the main filter system or pond.

The super efficiency of trickle tower filtration relates to the fact that the media used is not submerged but simply kept wet by the constant flow or trickle of pond water over it.  This enable the nitrifying bacteria to multiple far more quickly than with a conventional filter because the media is effectively saturated with oxygen since it is not submerged.  This provides the nitrifying bacteria with an abundant oxygen supply so the biomass establishes more quickly, and is much larger and more efficient than with conventional biological filtration.

Trickle towers mature quickly and as well as removing Ammonia and Nitrite, remove Nitrate as well as the abundant oxygen supply enables some of the Nitrate to be oxidised and converted to Nitrogen gas.

Any good biological media can be used in trickle towers but favourites are the honeycomb media which we supply (see below) since it has a very large surface area, provides for excellent water flow and distribution and is very light.  Japanese matting is also recommended.  We are delighted to be able to offer two models to cater for all pond sizes and individual requirements. The large unit is designed to be used as a three of four tower system, and the smaller unit can be stacked and built up to 6 or more trays and tailored to specific needs using any chosen media.

Protein Skimmers

Foam Fractionators or Protein Skimmers provides an excellent filtration aid to improving water quality and clarity by removing proteins and fine suspended solids from the pond water.  They achieve this by a process known as adsorption.

These units will appeal to those suffering from foam on the pond surface which is caused by proteins or dissolved organic compounds (DOC), or who have difficulty removing the very fine suspended solids found in pond water, especially during the warmer months.

The basics of operation is that pumped water passes through a venturi unit, where air is drawn in to the water flow which creates a mass of air bubbles. Proteins and fine solids stick to the surface of these bubbles by a process known as adsorption. The bubbles burst within the central inner chamber of the tank (or reaction chamber) and the extracted contaminants along with the foam are passed by gravity along a pipe to the external waste trap. The remaining filtered and cleaned water is returned to the pond.

The difference in clarity achieved using a protein skimmer is absolutely amazing.  The water will lose that yellow or brownish tinge, caused by proteins, and much of the fine solids normally present in pond water will also be removed leaving the water sparkling and clear.

An added benefit of these units is that oxygen levels in the pond are raised because of the amount of air that is drawn into the unit,  much of which will be dissolved into the water flow returning to the pond.

Tornado Protein skimmer

Tornado

£280.00

The Tornado utilises a Kaldnes type media to provide biological filtration in a similar way to a small trickle tower.

The unit will cater for ponds up to 6,000 gallons (27,000 litres) and is 180mm dia x 760mm high. Minimum pump requirement 2000 litres per hr. Recommended flow rate 4500 litres per hr. Pipe inlet size 3/4" – outlet 1.5".

Water enters the unit at the very top and is pumped via a venturi into the body where it trickles over the media. Foam and contaminants are passed down to the centre of the unit where they are separated from the cleaned water in a special reaction chamber. Foam and waste products then exit from the small waste outlet (shown on the lower left of the unit pictured). Cleaned water returns to the pond through the large 1.5" outlet on the lower right of the unit.

If required, the unit can be emptied for cleaning by removing the clip on lid assembly.  As the media and reaction chamber are self cleaning, maintenance of the unit is minimal.

Clarity Protein skimmers

Clarity protein skimmers were developed in Norway for both commercial fish farming operations and Koi ponds. They represent the latest technology in protein skimming as they work on a somewhat different principle to conventional skimmers. It has always been more difficult to get efficient protein removal from fresh water applications since bubble sizes produced with fresh water are large in comparison to salt water applications and therefore skimmers tend to be less efficient in fresh water.  Clarity has overcome this problem using patented design technology and these units work just as well with fresh water applications and are super efficient. So efficient are they that they not only remove DOC (Dissolved Organic Carbon), proteins and fine solids from the water, but they also lower Nitrate and Phosphate levels substantially, something which normally requires very special filter equipment.

However there is another huge difference between Clarity and other protein skimmers - they are not just protein skimmers, but Trickle towers and complete biological filters in their own right. The CL3 contains 50 litres of HSA type polypropylene media - as much as a Nexus 200! and the CL10 contains 100 litres of the same media - the same as a standard Nexus 300. In addition, because Clarity utilises this media in a Trickle tower configuration, it is biologically much more efficient than having the same amount of media in a conventional filter.  So with Clarity installed, there is no need for further or additional biological filtration. Therefore a Clarity systems can replace a conventional biological filter completely and will give far superior water quality.  Clarity represents one of the most amazing breakthroughs in filter technology in recent years.

Removal of nitrogen, nitrate and nitrite from a fish pond

Model and specification Price
CL3. For ponds to 3000 gallons. 130cm x 76cm x 36cm. Recommended flow rate 3,000  Litres / hour £695.00

CL10. For ponds to 9000 gallons. 130cm x 83cm x 50cm. Recommended flow rate 10,000 Litres / hour £1195.00

Treatment with Clarity™ gave approximately 40% reduction in total nitrogen, nitrite and nitrate in a 30 000L fish pond after just 9 days with recirculation every 5 hours.

Please note that the water source contained approximately 67kg live fish which were being fed 0.8kg food daily throughout the test.

Clarity units need no forced air input or venturis to create the foam, unlike other protein skimmers.  Apart from the fabulous efficiency, they only need low power pumps to run them so running costs are very low. The effectiveness of Clarity is shown clearly in the picture right.
