| Seido-Toro Japanese shrine
lanterns Japanese shrine or temple lanterns were first introduced into Japan in the Nara period (710-794) from China. Early lanterns were made of bronze and were primarily used for Buddhist worship. In Japan, the native Shinto religion adopted the lanterns for ceremonies which were often held at night, the flicker of candlelight creating a beautiful effect. They were used until the 16th century, and later hanging lanterns were used in Japanese temples and shrines often for ornamental rather than for functional reasons. They would be hung at the four corners of the building, or to light doorways. Later with the refinement of the Japanese tea ceremony, hanging lanterns came into private use where they were hung under the eaves of homes. These lanterns are all crafted in Japan and can be used to grace your home both inside and out. Please note that all shrine lanterns with wind bells are for decorative purposes only and cannot be illuminated. Made of cast iron.
