Rain Chains (Kusuari-Doi)

In Japan, rain chains or Kusari-Doi have been used for hundreds of years, and copper rain chains can be found on homes, gardens and temples throughout Japan. They provide a beautiful and functional substitute for the rainwater gutter down pipe, and produce a beautiful cascade of water that flows gracefully between the sections, and normally finish at ground level with a weight standing on pebbles to keep the chain taught in the wind, Water from the chains can be fed into a large pot or suitable drain covered in pebbles,

We are delighted to be able to offer one of the largest selections of rain chains outside Japan, which are available in many designs and different materials.  Copper chains are the most elegant, and in time weather to produce a delightful 'Verdigris Patina'  Rain chains come in a standard length of 2.7 to 3 metres and are complete with weight and may be shortened or lengthened to suit the installation.

Granite Water Basins

Water basins have had a time honoured place in Japanese gardens and tea gardens for centuries. They originated in shrines and temples for worshippers to wash their hands and mouth as a symbol of purification. The water basin originated as the Chozubachi, which were usually 16" tall or higher. Japanese tea masters later redesigned the bowls for Japanese tea gardens to a height of 12" or less to create the Tsukubai. This water basin, or crouching bowl, was designed to humble guests and to create the right state of mind in the Japanese tea garden prior to entering the tea house
