The Shishi-Odoshi was originally used by Japanese farmers to scare away deer and wild boar from the rice crops, and later became part of many Japanese gardens. The regular hollow knocking sound combined with the sound of running water complements the serenity of Japanese gardens today, As water flows into the end of the Shishi-Odoshi the pivoted length of bamboo becomes full of water. The weight of water then causes the pivot to tip forward, emptying the contents back into the pool, whilst the hollow rear end hits a conveniently placed rock when it returns to its primary position. This causes the regular knocking sound which is very effective at scaring away animals. These units are hand made in Japan using scorched timber and bamboo.

The Japanese fountain (Kalehi) is used to feed water into a stone basin (Chozubachi) or to trickle water into the end of a deer scarer. It can also be used on its own as a water fountain to return water to a stream or pond and creates another traditional Japanese feature in your water garden or Koi pond. Our bamboo fountains are supplied complete with internal plastic hosing. These units are made in Japan and construction is from scorched timber and bamboo.

One of the most treasured Japanese garden structures is the bamboo fence, the subtle texture and colours of natural bamboo, compliment all other elements of the traditional Japanese Garden. There are three basic types of Japanese bamboo fences; screen fences, sleeve fences and see though fences and gates. Screen and see through fences can be used to partition garden areas or border walkways, whilst tall wing fences normally extend from the house or a wall as a decorative screen, or to divide a space..

The Shioridro screens are constructed by tying a criss-cross of bamboo strips over a bamboo frame to create a strong decorative diagonal lattice. Each junction of the lattice is tied with black hemp knotted rope. Can be used singly as a gate, or joined to others to form a short see through screen fence, or can simply be used to form a background for plants or stone lanterns. To construct a fantastic bamboo fence, use the criss cross fence (see picture below)

The screen fence has scorched timber side pieces and vertical bamboo poles making up the panel supported by horizontal bamboo bracing tied with decorative black hemp.  The bamboo branch fence is constructed from a straw coloured bamboo frame covered by thin bamboo branches.

These low folding fences are typically used to edge a garden feature and are constructed from high grade straw coloured bamboo.
